Acacia lasiocarpa sedifolia - Sand Heath Wattle
Small Acacia shrub bearing masses of bright yellow, ball-shaped flowers heads that nearly cover the branches.  Blooms in the late winter and early spring.  Excellent, densely foliaged shrub for small gardens or pots since it only grows 6 to 20 inches (15-51 cm) high.  Attractive foliage consists of pale green phyllodes (leaf-like stems - no true leaves on most Acacias) that are 0.5 inch (1 cm) long and closely spaced on branches.  Drought tolerant plant from Western Australia.

Acacia myrtifolia - Myrtle Wattle
Australian Acacia shrub growing 3 to 9 feet (1-3 meters) high.  The dark green phyllodes are 3 inches (7.6 cm) long and elliptical in shape with pointed tips and contrast beautifully with reddish branches.  Spectacular display of bright yellow, ball-shaped flower heads in racemes during the winter and spring.  Tolerates high heat and drought.

Unique weeping form of Acacia growing 5 to 10 feet (1.5-3 meters) high.  The gray-green foliage consists of pointed phyllodes (leaf-like stems - no true leaves on most Acacias) that are 1.5 to 1.75 inch (1-2 cm) long.  In the late winter and early spring, globular, bright yellow flower heads appear along branches making a spectacular display.  Tolerates a wide range of climates and soils thus easy to cultivate.  Attractive even when not blooming.  Drought tolerant plant from New South Wales, Australia.

Adenium obesum - Desert Rose
Succulent like shrub with swollen base and thick branches bearing very showy clusters of pink flowers during the summer.  The flowers are trumpet-shaped and 2 inches (5 cm) wide.  The foliage is glossy, green and somewhat spoon-shaped.  Leaves are usually clustered near the branch ends and deciduous during either the cooler (CA) or drier months (FL,TX, HI) of the year.  Very attractive plant year around even when bare as an older plant.  Good house plant for sunny windows.  Needs to be kept dry when leafless.  Strictly a tropical plant native to seasonally dry areas of Madagascar.

Arbutus unedo 'Compacta' - Compact Strawberry Tree
Evergreen shrub or small tree from the Mediterranean.  The leaves are 2 to 3 inches (5-7.6 cm) long, elliptical, shiny, dark green with fine teeth along margins.  They are closely set on reddish branchlets.  The dense foliage is adorned by one inch (2.5 cm) diameter fruits that begin as yellow, then turn orange, and finally mature to red.  All colors of fruits appear at the same time on the plant.  Fruits are edible and have a mildly sweet taste and gritty texture.  Hanging clusters of small, white, urn-shaped flowers appear in the fall and winter and often accompany the fruits.  The bark of the trunk and branches is reddish-brown with a linear, shredded texture.  Drought tolerant and reliable garden shrub for California.  Grow in full sun.

Dwarf Gold Stalk Banksia
Spectacular, evergreen shrub from Western Australia with dense foliage and long cylindrical, bright yellow flower spikes.  The flower spikes are 6 to 7 inches (15-17.5 cm) long and tightly packed with the filamentous flowers. They appear like giant, yellow bottle brushes at the top of the branch tips.  Blooms during the winter and early spring.  Leaves are elliptical, 2.5 to 3 inches (6-7.6 cm) long, stiff, dark green and shiny with prickles along margins.  Drought tolerant.  Less subject to Phytophthora crown rot thus one of the more successful Banksia species for California gardens.

Large, tropical shrub that produces a spectacular display of huge, peach-colored, pendent, trumpet-shaped flowers.  One plant can have dozens of flowers at once!  The flowers are 6 to 9 inches (15-23 cm) long and 3 to 4 inches (8-10 cm) wide.  Their fragrance is unique and especially strong at night.  The leaves are ovate and measure 10 to 12 inches (25-30 cm) long.  Minute hairs cover the leaves giving them a soft, velvet-like texture.  Fast growing with multiple stems from 5 to 15 feet (1.5-4.6 meters) tall.  Best grown in part shade or afternoon shaded areas.

Very attractive shrub or small tree from southern Texas. Beautiful tree specimen flanks the north side of the Alamo. The large, large 4 to 5 inch (10-13 cm) long, dark green, ovate leaves contrast sharply with clusters of pure white funnel flowers with small yellow centers. Each flower is about 2 inches (5 cm) in diameter. Blooms 7 to 8 months out of the year, usually April to November. Cold hardy and drought tolerant once established. Grows best in hot areas from deserts to the monsoon tropics. Deep, but infrequent waterings are best.

Small, spectacular, shrub of the Protea family only growing 3 to 6 ½ feet (1 -2 meters) high. The “flowers” are profuse and very showy yet different in structure from those of most other plants. They are either male or female and arranged in a central conical structure surrounded by bright yellow involucral leaves which become red blushed with age.
