Phoenix dactylifera - Date Palm
This is the Middle Eastern palm known for the date fruit, but also makes an attractive landscape subject with its symmetrical crown of gray-green, feather-type leaves. The crown is rounded, somewhat open, and usually has an even spacing of 20 to 30 leaves. Leaves are 10 to 15 feet (3-4.6 meters) long and consist of stiff, pointed leaflets that are 1 foot (30 cm) long. The trunk is grayish-brown with the stubs of old leaf bases and averages about 18 inches (45 cm) in diameter. Young plants in the ground form some side shoots which are usually removed to maintain a solitary trunk. This hardy and durable palm tolerates heat, drought, cold to 18 degrees F, and high soil salinity. Grows moderately fast to 50 (15 meters) or more feet tall. The plants are seedlings of Medjool variety which is known for its outstanding quality of fruit. They are very large, brown fruit that are very sweet. Most plants should produce fruit similar to parent, but a number of plants are required to ensure that male and female plants are together for pollination.

Parajubaea torallyi torallyi - Bolivian Mountain Coconut
Large, pinnate leaf palm that has resemblance to Coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) and related to it. The leaves are not quite as long (10-13 feet or 3-4 meters) and trunk is straight. The leaflets are dark green and grow in single plane on rachis. The trunk is 18 inches (45 cm) in diameter and gray. The upper portion is covered with leaf bases and dark brown fibers. Grows at a slow to moderate rate. Tolerates drought and cooler temperatures than coconut palms so well suited to California. Rare and endangered palm from the high, dry Andean valleys of Bolivia. Phoenix dactylifera - Date Palm
This is the Middle Eastern palm known for the date fruit, but also makes an attractive landscape subject with its symmetrical crown of gray-green, feather-type leaves. The crown is rounded, somewhat open, and usually has an even spacing of 20 to 30 leaves. Leaves are 10 to 15 feet (3-4.6 meters) long and consist of stiff, pointed leaflets that are 1 foot (30 cm) long. The trunk is grayish-brown with the stubs of old leaf bases and averages about 18 inches (45 cm) in diameter. Young plants in the ground form some side shoots which are usually removed to maintain a solitary trunk. This hardy and durable palm tolerates heat, drought, cold to 18 degrees F, and high soil salinity. Grows moderately fast to 50 (15 meters) or more feet tall. The plants are seedlings of Medjool variety which is known for its outstanding quality of fruit. They are very large, brown fruit that are very sweet. Most plants should produce fruit similar to parent, but a number of plants are required to ensure that male and female plants are together for pollination.

Young plants adaptable to lower light conditions indoors, but best near large window or enclosed patio. If you forget to water this palm for several days, it will still appear good and will tolerate salinity accumulation from repeated waterings unlike most other houseplants.
