The plant is characterized by thick, narrow leaves that are green above and gray beneath. Leaves are closely arranged on branching stolons, which root into the ground surface. Growth rate is slow, but eventually forms a tight, resilient, durable mat. Moderate foot traffic and even automobiles periodically driven over it leave it unaffected. This makes Dymondia well suited as a turf substitute. Mowing is not even necessary.
