Hibiscus acetosella - Red Hibiscus
Striking, reddish-purple leaved Hibiscus species. The leaves are palmately lobed with serrated margins giving the appearance of a Japanese maple (Acer palmatum). Also, like a Japanese maple, the leaves are similarly sized at 3 to 4 inches (7.6 - 10 cm) wide. Dark red flowers about 3 inches (7.6 cm) wide open along stems during the day. Fast growing shrub with upright, dark red stems 3 to 4 feet (1 -1.2 meter) high and 4 to 6 feet (1.2 - 1.8 meter) wide. Pruning promotes dense, neat appearance. Great substitute for Japanese maple in southern California where these suffer from salinity "burn". Grow in full sun.
