Phoenix dactylifera - Date Palm
This is the Middle Eastern palm known for the date fruit, but also makes an attractive landscape subject with its symetrical crown of gray-green, feather-type leaves. The crown is rounded, somewhat open, and usually has an even spacing of 20 to 30 leaves. Leaves are 10 to 15 feet (3-4.6 meters) long and consist of stiff, pointed leaflets that are 1 foot (30 cm) long. The trunk is grayish-brown with the stubs of old leaf bases and averages about 18 inches (45 cm) in diameter. Young plants in the ground form some side shoots which are usually removed to maintain a solitary trunk. This hardy and durable palm tolerates heat, drought, cold to 18 degrees F, and high soil salinity. Grows moderately fast to 50 (15 meters) or more feet tall. The plants are seedlings of Medjool variety which is known for its outstanding quality of fruit. They are very large, brown fruit that are very sweet. Most plants should produce fruit similiar to parent, but a number of plants are required to ensure that male and female plants are together for pollination. Zone 8

Washingtonia filfera - California Fan Palm
The large fan leaves, thick trunk, and skirt of old leaves make this the symbol of Palm Springs, California. This palm is native to the spring fed canyons just outside town and other canyons of the southern California and Arizona desert. Large, pale green fan leaves are 5 to 6 feet (1.5-1.8 meter) wide and divided into segments that extend halfway into leaf. Filaments that hang from each segment are one of the characteristics that distinquish this species from the more common Mexican Fan Palm, Washingtonia robusta. The species name is derived from this characteristic. The trunk is 3 feet (0.9 meter) in diameter and brown. The portion just below the leaf crown is typically covered with the old leaves forming a straw-colored skirt. The palm is heat, drought, and saline tolerant. Also, it is hardy to 15 degrees F. The more moderate growth rate of this species of Washingtonia make suitable for large containers for some years. This palm makes attractive groves when plants of varying heights are planted together. Once more commonly planted in southern California and seen as large specimens in older communities, but being rediscovered as an impressive landscape plant for water conservation.
